Higher Ground

I’m up in the mountains at a church staff retreat for a few days.  What an encouraging time of prayer, planning, refinement, and fellowship we are having with our leadership team.  Two of our key couples (the Stevensons and Galangs) have recently been sent off to other congregations, plus we’ve been adding quite a few great young interns and new ministers, so our team has changed a lot recently.  So this is a great opportunity for our new team to bond and get closer to God and to each other.

Being up in the mountains is my favorite place to connect with God.  Growing up in Colorado might have something to do with that.  And when I first got baptized we were living in the foothills above Denver and so my early Christian days were filled with many trips up the canyon and prayer times next to mountain creeks.  It’s not hard to notice how many amazing moments in the Bible happened on mountains.  There is just something about going up to “higher ground.”

And that’s the inspiration for my latest CD, “Higher Ground”.  Many of the songs talk about the elevating power of walking with God.  This week I thought I would share the title track, which is a song about how you can be stuck spiritually, things not going the way you  want them to, needing God to lift you up.  And every time He comes though.  Let me know what you think of the song.

(Other children of the 80’s like myself, you will probably hear a bit of Peter Gabriel inspiration in this tune.)

Higher Ground

HIGHER GROUND

Brake lights
for as far as I
can see
Mountain’s too high
For me
To climb
I am frozen
Body’s broken
Can’t move
I need something
To lift me up

Lift me up and
Rescue me
Lift me up and
Set me free
Lift me up and
Set my feet
On high…

I seek and find
You open eyes
that were blind
I was lost
now I’m found
only you can
take me to
higher ground
higher ground

I was tired
I was on a wire
Gunna fall
I did’t think I
could keep this up
Take me higher
Fill my mind with
Your thoughts
I am crying out for
Your love

Lift me up and
Rescue me
Lift me up and
Set me free
Lift me up and
Set my feet
On high…

I seek and find
You open eyes
that were blind
I was lost
now I’m found
only you can
take me to
higher ground
higher ground

  1. Love it brother! I take your albums with me when I go running and I know right now I’m going to have to consciously pace myself when this one comes on so I don’t break into a full-on sprint. Keep em coming!
